Four decades before Bear Grylls was parachuting from helicopters, running through forest fires and dining on freshly culled snakes, Dick Proenneke was living alone in a remote cabin in the Alaskan wilderness, hunting for his food. Armed (in addition to an array of knives and pick axes) with a video camera and tripod, Proenneke filmed his time “Alone in the Wilderness” in order to show his relatives in the lower 48 states what life was like in the Alaska backcountry. The best of that footage was turned into a three-part series, available from www.DickProenneke.com
