The Incredible Solar Electric Flight is an ambitious expedition set to make a significant breakthrough in the use of solar electric technology whilst raising money for the charity AtaxiaUK. The Solar Electric Flight Team will be flying a newly designed electric paramotor, along with several other Parajet paramotors powered by bioethanol, 2,000km from Monaco to Morocco – a world first.
Starting in Monte Carlo on 24 July 2009, the Solar Electric Flight Team will use battery power, solar energy and paramotors to make the expedition over two continents. It is estimated to take two weeks to complete, arriving in Ceuta, Morocco around August 7th.
The flight is in aid of Ataxia UK and organised by The Incredible Website. Ataxia is the principal symptom of a group of neurological disorders called the cerebellar ataxias. Ataxia may also be a symptom of other conditions such as multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy. The Incredible Website states:
“The website is all about incredible adventures, feats and endeavours. By organising fundraising events, such as the Incredible Solar Electric Flight, we hope to raise awareness of Ataxia. The events are often life changing experiences and we hope that these will inspire our website visitors to conceive their own unique charitable endeavours.”
The expedition is also helped by the star of Channel 4’s Born Survivor series, Bear Grylls. Grylls is a trained survivalist and explorer and pledged support back in March after hearing of the flight and its cause. “I am asked to take part in many expeditions - few have touched me like this," Grylls said. "I wish the team all the best and encourage people to show their support however they can for this worthy charity”.
