Think you know your Eiffel Tower from your Leaning Tower of Pisa? Know where Italy is on the map? How about Rome? A session on Geo Challenge could provide all the answer – and let you know how good your geography really is.
Geo Challenge is a Facebook application and now boasts over four million monthly users – one of the most popular on the site.
Educational but fun, it uses a Q&A method to help players increase their geographical knowledge. The application was created by Playfish, the social gaming company behind other quizzes such as Who Has the Biggest Brain.
Geo Challenge takes you on a tour around the world as you put your geography knowledge to the test. The quizmaster is a cartoon animated holiday rep who asks for your help in different scenarios.
The first - Suitcase Shuffle – sees flag-covered suitcases sent down a conveyor belt hopefully to their correct destination: the player must decide which. The next task, Map Mayhem, requires the player to decide where each tourist is flying, escorting them to their gate using a template map.
The third challenge, City Blitz, gets players to stick a pin in the map where they believe cities are located. The final task, Landmark Loco, is a sightseeing challenge, which tests the player’s knowledge of famous attractions.
It's become so popular that one player, Ofra Nathan, 32, from Israel, set up the fan group ‘Geo Challenge addicts’ for over 200 members who share her “enthusiasm” for the game.
The airport check-in agent said: “I've learned more about geography and the world from this game than I did in my whole life.
“All my friends from work love that game and we kind of compete with each other to see who knows more … I think that whoever has the power to do so, should get this game into the education system beacuse it's so good.”
Geo Challenge is playable in five different languages and can be used on a mobile platform too.
