Swedish explorer Mikael Strandberg has revealed in his blog for WideWorld what 10 items of kit he feels is essential for any polar expedition.
The list includes thermal underwear, which Strandberg says is "probably the most important item" in his backpack. "They don´t itch, they’re very durable, comfortable and they keep you warm. Even in Siberia," he says.
Other items include an axe, matches, a sleeping bag and compass.
Strandberg says he has used a Silvas Expedition 25 compass for years and "it never fails".
He also says an assortment of good gloves is essential to prevent frostbite. "Everything from thin fleece gloves, wool gloves to heavy down mittens".
