Few things can be as unnerving as glugging back a cup of water that’s been zapped with a SteriPEN. It’s the futuristic aspect of water purification, a kind of lightsaber that sends the Darth Vaders of the bacterial world packing. Using UV light, the SteriPEN destroys viruses, bacteria and protozoa in your wild water, making it totally safe to drink – and it even doubles as a torch, a nifty way to pack light.

The Adventurer Opti version is the size of an electric toothbrush, and once placed in one litre of unsafe water, takes just 90 seconds to blast the bad guys. One unit will purify up to 8000 litres – enough to last you a few years of camping and hiking trips.

Using it is that simple: you just push the button to activate the UV, select the volume of water to be purified [0.5l or 1l].  Place the lamp in clear water and the UV lamp will kick into action and shine blue, then stir until the indicator LED turns green.
