Bulletproof sunglasses

Made for law enforcement personnel in the States, these shades pack some punch

Product

5.11 Tactical Hawk Eyewear.

Promise

High quality sunglasses that can withstand the paces they're put through by law enforcement, special operations and fire personnel in their native USA.

Performance

These black shades look not unlike a pair of vintage Ray Ban Wayfarers. The difference between these and their stylish designer cousins, though, is that they've been designed by a former Navy SEAL to give affordability (these REALLY won't break the bank at just £36), ballistic protection (come on, you know you'll need it), and classic sunglasses styling. The black matte nylon frames feature 5.11's Pflex technology – in layman's terms, the arms are flexible but don't break – and have oil and sweat-resistant rubber points where they rest on your nose and ears. They also come with a neoprene leash and hard-shell case.

Verdict

When we first opened the box that these sunglasses came in, they felt a bit, well, flimsy. But three weeks of constant use has won us over. It's true – the nylon frames make them incredibly lightweight – but they're hard-wearing, really flexible, very strong, plus they look good. And while we'll probably never find out whether they can withstand a bullet, it's something to boast about, isn't it?
