Winter seems to be finally giving way to the first signs of spring. The sun is out, the daffodils are in bloom, the sound of a distant lawn mower drifts upon the breeze. Summer is on the horizon and it’s time to get outdoors.
Sometimes it’s hard to get back into the swing of exercise after a long and cold winter. Those hardy enough having been cycling and jogging all year round, but many of us need to get the bike out of the shed for the first time in a few months, or dust off the old hiking boots.
If you need any motivation to spring into action, focusing on a challenge for a good cause is an ideal place to start. WideWorld has partnered with the CARE Challenge Series to offer our readers the opportunity to challenge yourselves, and challenge poverty.
If cycling is your thing, limber up for the ride of a lifetime… cycle from capital to capitale, in the CARE London to Paris bike ride from July 1st to 4th.
For hikers, there’s a fantastic range of mountain challenges which will get you out into the most stunning scenery the UK has to offer. Take on the Scottish Three Peaks Challenge from May 8th - 9th: Three historic mountains, including a moonlit view of the Highlands during an overnight ascent.
Go one further and take on the UK Three Peaks Challenge. Taking place une 12th -13th and September 11th - 12th , this event takes in Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon: the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales in 24 hours.
If three mountains aren’t enough, you could tackle the ambitious 24 Peaks Challenge between June 26th and 27th. Twenty four mountains in as many hours – surely the ultimate UK mountain adventure.
You could even combine cycling and hiking with a bit of something different - canoeing on May 22nd and September 4th, or rafting on June 3rd – in a one-day adventure Challenge. These events cover the distance of a marathon by combining three activities.
For the globe trotters: the CARE Egypt Challenge will see participants summiting three mountains in the Sinai Desert, including three nights camping under the stars, Bedouin-style.
Other challenges include the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, a day of ups and downs in the scenic Yorkshire Dales, and CARE’s own celebratory 25th Anniversary walkathon: a 25 kilometre walk around Windsor to celebrate 25 years of CARE in the UK, suitable for individuals, friends and families.
As well as getting out into the Great Outdoors and achieving something amazing, you’ll also be raising funds to support CARE’s crucial work in challenging poverty.
