Joss Stone - Right to be Wrong
I discovered this song shortly after moving to Dahab, when everyone thought I'd lost the plot completely by giving up a successful business and life in London for a dirty hippy town in Egypt. It totally sums up the feeling of doing something against the grain, against the norm, and having the strength of conviction to carry it through. Life isn't about doing things perfectly and always being right, it's about having experiences and learning from them, and moving to Dahab, stepping out of the daily grind and doing something new and exciting is what this song is about for me. I used to cycle round town with my headphones on singing this out loud and getting odd looks from the locals - I didn't care, I felt so alive!
Gurunam
This is a yoga and meditation song that I use a lot. It just has a very calming, soothing rhythm and I used to listen to it while preparing for my world record dives back in 2007. I still use it a lot for my meditation practice and yoga classes when I'm teaching. It's a good neutral background against which to clear the mind and really focus on a dive, or a meditation
Snow Patrol - Hands Open
After my mum died last spring and I returned to Dahab, I found it really hard to smile and feel the joy in life. This song, especially the chorus - 'I want to hear you laugh like you really mean it, collapse into me tired with joy' - really struck a chord with me. I would dance round the house with my broom and mop on cleaning days and sing along. It brought back a small part of that realisation that life is for joyful living
Amos Lee - Sweet Pea
This just makes me smile!
Snatam Kaur - Aadays Tisay Aadays
A love prayer, taken from the Sikh religion - she is probably the most popular artist for songs for Kundalini Yoga. She has the most amazing voice - soft, powerful, angelic, inspiring... I can get lost in her voice. And the mantras and prayers that she sings are utterly uplifting. The fact that they're in Gurmukhi, an ancient language connected to Sanskrit, and not in English, means that my mind can really soar - I'm not connecting to any emotion that my mind can grasp on to simply from words, it is the sentiment in the music that carries the soul. Beautiful to meditate, relax or even work to.
Seal - I am
This is a song that most people won't know from Seal, but he's also a very experienced Kundalini practitioner and has recorded an album called Game of Chants. This song, I am, is about self-acceptance and oneness; a reminder that ultimately we're all the same, with the same dreams, hopes, vulnerabilities... We're all so quick to put ourselves down, judge ourselves - just listen to your inner voice next time you're trying to do something and you will be shocked by how negative you can be about yourself. As well as the really powerful message in 'I am' it also reminds us of what is truly important - the children, the future of our planet. The first time I heard this song in a yoga class I cried my heart out as I was touched by the beauty in the words
Amos Lee - Bottom of the Barrel
If I had to choose one song for the Vertical Blue competition in the Bahamas, this would be it. I hit rock bottom just days before the start of the event - self-doubt was winning the battle, I couldn't stop crying when I entered the water, and I was thinking of booking myself on to the first flight out. But support from friends and a determination not to give up or be beaten won through - I had hit the bottom of the barrel and floated back on top - and by 2nd April I was ready to reclaim my World Record in Constant Weight. Thanks, Amos. This song has been my mantra, my constant company and brightener of moods here on Long Island. You inspired me to dig deep!
Goodfellas – Original soundtrack
No matter what, this lifts my mood, particularly the song, 'Beyond the Sea'. The song has appeared in loads of films now and I particularly love the tequila-fuelled Cameron Diaz/Ewan McGregor version in 'A Life Less Ordinary' which is also a fave film of mine.
Cirque du Soleil, Allegria
This is pure fantasy world. I took my family to see this show for Christmas years ago, and cried when it finished as I didn't want it to ever end! I went back and cried all over again! Beautiful, magical, how I imagine heaven to be.
