On 27th July, Californian Jordan Romero successfully reached the summit of Carstensz Pyramid, Indonesia – at just 13, becoming the youngest person ever to reach the 16,023 peak. This leaves Jordan with only two mountains left to summit to achieve his dream of becoming the youngest person ever to complete the Seven Summits.
The Seven Summits comprise the highest mountains of the world’s seven continents. Carstensz is the highest peak in Oceania and a notoriously challenging technical climb. Jordan’s completion of the climb leaves him with only Mt. Vinson (Antarctica) and Everest (Asia) standing between him and the world record.
The current record for the youngest person to complete the Seven Summits is held by Johnny Strange, who completed the seven climbs with Everest this spring, aged 17. Ambitious Romero has blogged that he is aiming to complete his final peaks in the next year. Meanwhile, the teenager attends high school in Big Bear Lake, California, and organises fundraisers in the area to aid his expeditions. His latest project is the 7 Summits Youth Challenge, where Jordan will lead young people in his area up Big Bear’s highest summits.
