Next year, mountaineering legend Sir Chris Bonington will be celebrating the anniversary of his first foray into the Himalaya: It will be 50 years since his first ascent of Annapurna II, and will also mark 40 years since his first ascent of the south face of Annapurna I.
To celebrate his incredible achievements, Sir Chris – now 75 years old – will be revisiting the Annapurna peaks on a specially organised Himalayan tour. The tour has been organised by Bonington Treks, a boutique trekking business founded by Sir Chris's son, expedition leader Joe Bonington. And there are still a few places left to join father and son on this remarkable journey.
The 22-day route has been especially planned by both Boningtons and will include a rarely-trekked forested ridge to give participants a view of the south side of Annapurna. The trek costs £5,000 and includes tents and meals on the trail, internal flights, hotel accommodation and a lecture by Sir Chris. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend 23 days with the grandfather of British mountaineering in his element," said Joe Bonington.
Sir Chris's career to date has included 19 expeditions to the Himalayas, of which four were to Mount Everest. In the 1970s he led the first ascent of the south face of the Annapurna, and the first ascent of the south west face of Everest – at the time the greatest unclaimed prize in mountaineering.
