Somalian pirates have demanded a $7million ransom for kidnapped Britons, Mr and Mrs Chandler. The couple, from Kent, were captured from their yacht a week ago, en route from the Seychelles to Tanzania. The couple have been able to talk to family and press, although not to give details of their location. They have, however, stated that they are not being mistreated.
Rising sea levels are threatening Australia’s coastal towns, research has shown. A parliamentary report predicted a sea rise of 31 inches before 2010, and recommended new laws banning any further development in coastal areas. With 80% of Australians living on the country’s coasts, the predictions could have a drastic effect on the whole ethos of a very coastal nation.
After a business deal agreed only 2 years ago, rumours are rife that the BBC is to offload travel publishers Lonely Planet. As the original founders of the guides are approaching retirement, and with guides having been published for almost everywhere in the world, insiders are asking where LonelyPlanet can go from here. And, it seems, the BBC may not be able to find an answer.
A New Zealand adventurer is attempting to complete 7 of New Zealand’s ‘Great Walks’, in the same number of days. Malcolm Law, a keen runner, has set himself the ‘7 in 7’ goal to raise money for leukemia research. The 7 walks will total at a route of 223 miles, to be completed in just one week.
