The Namib Desert challenge is back for its second year of gruelling terrain and mighty sand dunes along some of the most highly protected areas of the Sossusvlei region in Africa.
This ultimate test of endurance runs from the 21st to the 25th February, covering 220km over five days with no route indicators or distance markers, just a map and compass to navigate and reach a designated tented campsite. Competitors carry everything they need to survive in a backpack.
This intense running adventure will see each person pitched against the toughest elements on the planet, trekking through African bushveld, rocky mountain trails and 300-metre-high sand dunes.
In return, competitors will see some of the most splendid scenery Namibia has to offer, including the Naukluft National park. Strictly off limits to the public special permission must be obtained to allow the competitors inside to see the local wildlife and spectacular views.
Buys Steenkamp, the 2009 champion said: “It’s definitely a challenge... but then, while testing your stamina to the limit, you’re surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.”
World record holder Mimi Anderson has also signed up for the race, and entries are now open for all those endurance junkies out there to join her.
Organisers are also looking for volunteers and medical crew to assist.
