Ericsson 4 has provisionally won The Volvo Ocean Race (VOR), after vying with seven other spirited teams in some of the most tremendous conditions. A third-place finish in the penultimate leg has given Ericsson 4 a 13-point advantage over runner-up Puma, with only 12 points up for grabs in the duration of the race.
Ericsson 4 captain Torben Grael has expressed delight at his teams’ now-inevitable win: “We made a few errors on the leg, but we got what we wanted so we're pretty happy.
"We were very close in Marstrand, but now it's done. It's finished. We can really enjoy it”, he added.
It was Puma, however, that triumphed in leg nine, strengthening their overall position on the leader board. Puma boss Kenny Read has praised his team’s fortitude during their first leg win: “When we let them get ahead of us at the lighthouse, I think most teams would have quit right there.
“Adversity seems to be our friend and we got a little break when they got their jib hung up on the radar dome,” he added.
The pursuit, which has seen multi-million dollar boats and their teams of 11 compete, demonstrates how Fleet Broadband can be exerted in the most turbulent of marine environments.
