Five Ten Camp Four approach shoes
Promise
A rugged yet lightweight hiking shoe. The ultimate alternative to cumbersome hiking boots.
Performance
Developed from decades of research in Yosemite's Camp Four, these approach shoes are every bit as comfortable off the trail as on. You can cinch the laces up all the way to the toe for optimum comfort and an exterior heel cage gives added strength and support. These shoes can take some serious punishment.
After several hours (and miles) on Europe's highest volcano, Mount Etna, even coarse basalt scree left them completely unscathed. Despite an hour's running descent of 1400m, my usually blister-prone feet were also unharmed, a genuine first.
Despite the lack of waterproofing becoming apparent after a stretch of spring snow, as a summer day-tripper they are ideal. In the heat where Gore-tex can turn your feet soggy with sweat, these breathed well and were dry again well before the car park.
A co-moulded sticky Stealth sole results in high friction climbing and durable shock absorbing rubber. The addition of a steel shank provides further stability while remaining flexible enough not to have you walking like a veteran ski instructor in peak season.
With so many climbers, hikers and cyclists waxing lyrical about these bad boys you'll be hard pressed to find a word against them. They're simply the most comfortable and versatile outdoor footwear I have owned.
Verdict
For all manner of day trips and approaches these Camp Fours are hard to beat. They can hump a heavy load and take a beating on rough terrain, all the while remaining light enough to go faster, further and for longer.
