Lightweight walking shoe with ion-mask waterproof technology
Performance
Looking for a soft and light shoe to take the strain of some serious mileage this summer? Hi-Tec have come up trumps again with the Viper Trail Ultra WPi. Nubuck and mesh with a Vibram sole, these trainer-style walking shoes are endowed with the smart Ion-Mask treatment, a water-repelling finish that keeps your feet dry inside – even through mesh.
It works, too – we tested these out in long damp grass, and our feet stayed bone dry after several hours outside. These aren’t built for fording streams, but they’re just the job for a British summer hike in all weathers.
The trainer-like design is comfy, and feels well-padded – almost like a skate shoe. A ghilley lacing system hugs the top of the foot and works just as well when wet and muddy, although these models lack a gusset in the tongue – so don’t dip your feet too deep unless you’re laced up tight.
Sole-wise the design works really effectively, with grips that work as well for hiking as well as running, and the rubber toe and curved heel give excellent protection.
Verdict
A great all-rounder for hikers looking for a lighter option, especially in the summer.
