Trailer tent that sings

"Opera" - invention that revolutionises caravanning

by Clare Sellar

10.11.2009

When thinking of a trailer tent, the Opera is definitely not what first springs to mind. This new concept in temporary accommodation, designed by Axel Enthoven, is called the Opera because of its distinctive Sydney Opera House shape; and it doesn’t have the subtitle ‘Your Suite in Nature’ for nothing.

No poles or pegs are required here, as the Opera electrically opens and levels itself in under five minutes, wherever you like, into a space measuring an incredible seven metres long, over three metres wide and three-and-a-half metres high. What’s more impressive is the two lavish adjustable beds that slide together in a single movement, hot and cold running water, warm air heating, a ceramic toilet, an espresso bar (seriously), a wine cabinet and a mobile cooker - should you wish to dine al fresco.

Only luxury materials are being used in the first ‘mobile holiday homes’, currently being handcrafted in Geldrop in the Netherlands. Teak flooring, leather and stainless steel provide the opulent aesthetic of a yacht, but combined with the unbeatable feeling of camping under canvas. The Opera even comes with what is known as the Opera Guide - recommending exclusive sites, with advice on nearby restaurants and picturesque destinations.

Its designer, Axel Enthoven, is head of the Man & Mobility department at the Academy of Industrial Design in Eindhoven. He has won over 25 awards in eight countries, and his firm, Enthoven Associates, has designed over 1,700 products. The Opera was conceived and developed, however, by Rob Vos, previously of the automotive industry.

Opera will be showcased for the first time at the Design At Work trade fair in Kortrijk, 8 - 10 December. Price as yet unknown.
