Unprecedented conditions on the River Dart have claimed the life of an experienced canoeist. Chris Wheeler, nicknamed 'Magic Knees' after dislocating both knees on a waterfall, died after becoming trapped against a tree in a challenging stretch of the swollen river.
Wheeler, 46, was a paddler of some 25 years experience and a contributor to Canoe and Kayak UK magazine. Heavy rain and gale force winds created singular conditions as Wheeler tackled a patch of the Dart known as 'Mad Mile.'
Two other canoeists rescued during the operation were treated for mild hypothermia.
"The bit of river between Dartmeet and Newbridge is one of the best bits of river in the country," says Robert Steemson, head of recreation, rangers and estates for Dartmoor National Park.
"You have to be a very experienced canoeist to go down on that piece of river."
The Met Office has warned of more heavy weather to come. North Wales, Cumbria and Galloway are likely to be severely affected by further rainfall over the next three days. If you are planning a trip in these areas, seek advice first.
