The coastal town of Peniche, Portugal, about 100 km north of Lisbon, is to host this year's Rip Curl Pro Search surfing tournament, the penultimate stop on this year's 10-date ASP World Tour.
The location has remained a closely guarded secret to the surfing community this season, but the announcement was made at a press launch in Lisbon this week. The event takes place between October 19th and 30th.
Due to its unique geographical location, surf is almost guaranteed, no matter what the wind or swell direction. Rip Curl's event manager Scott Hargreaves said he was excided at the industry's reaction to the announcement.
Peniche boasts what many surfers have nicknamed 'the European Pipeline' - a powerful barrel wave that emerges from deep Atlantic swells. According to insiders, the fact that the Peniche event is the penultimate on the ASP Men's World Tour calendar, it could see this year's world champion emerge at the end of the 12 days.
The event will be broadcast live at ripcurl.com and aspworldtour.com, with multiple cameras and professional commentary documenting every wave, thrill and spill.
