A new iPhone app is the first of its kind to let you measure the wind speed using your handset.
Priced at just 59 pence, the Wind Meter lets you know the approximate wind speed, between 0 and 28 mph, wherever you go.
It was developed by some young Silicon Valley engineers who found an ingenious way of measuring wind speed using the iPhone's microphone. It uses complex algorithms to convert sound to gauge wind velocity.
Ideal for sailors, kitesurfers and windsurfers, to use it you just point the microphone directly into the wind, press the Get Wind! button, wait a few seconds, then press it again. The final reading is the average wind speed.
Although in WideWorld's Great British Escapes feature we're suggesting places you can go and leave your iPhone behind, this little iPhone app is pretty indispensible if you're a seafarer.
