Steve Backshall’s Wildlife Adventurer’s Guide

Promise

All you need to get started in the world of naturalism, with an accent on the extreme.

Performance

Irrepressible is one word you’d use to describe Steve Backshall with. He’s long been a favourite on TV, taking youths out to the sticks for slices of adventure and wildlife encounters; older WideWorlders may also remember his name since he was among the BBC expedition to New Guinea that discovered dozens of new species. In this book,  he sets out what you can do right here in the UK to create your own adventures and encounters. It’s a mish-mash of survival techniques, spotter’s guides, travelling anecdotes and advice on things like photography, caving and climbing. It’s eminently readable, light and lively, with enough hard knowledge being split to satisfy the adult reader while still being suitable for younger naturalists – no mean feat.

Verdict

A great Christmas present for anyone who wants to get out and explore more: a book that’s close to WideWorld’s heart.
