Can a carafe ever be rugged?

GSI Personal Java Coffee Press

Promise

Like coffee? Like camping? Steady yourself, traveller: we’ve got just the thing. A personal and portable real coffee-making kit – but is it as handy as they say?

Performance

Not one but two gizmos, really: both shatter resistant, of course, and both combine to make you a good cup of coffee when you need one most. Having a separate mug and carafe means your brew won’t get too strong and bitter, while a decent plunger design will get rid of any loose grounds that ruin a good cup. The mug itself is insulated, stacks inside the carafe and comes with a sip-it lid that reduces heat loss and can also be used while on the move. For hygiene bunnies, you’ll be pleases to know you can take the insulating sleeves off both carafe and mug for easy cleaning.

Verdict

It’s a great way to make a good cup of coffee: GSI knows what it's doing when it comes to sturdy camp gear. Although you can strip more weight from your pack by having a drip-filter set-up for coffee (check out GSI’s Ultralight Java Drip here), this will keep your brew hotter and more tasty.
