The Three Peaks challenge is tough. But half of your time is spent in a car, not up a hillside somewhere, exposed to the elements. Care, a charity challenge outfit, are giving anyone the chance to join in a rugged alternative that tops 24 peaks in 24 hours instead.
The 24 Peak Challenge is a hike that takes place entirely in the Lake District over two days: day one consists of ten peaks in 14 hours - including Scafell Pike - while day two mounts 14 peaks in just ten hours. Despite the gap between legs of the race, the actual time spent on the ground can be twice what you'd get if you climbed Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell together.
The race takes place over the 27-28 June, and while the challenge is open to individuals, teams are asked to raise £6,000 for CARE, an action group who work to relieve poverty in the third world.
